Man Shops Globe

greatest job ever? Sundance Channel — premieres Oct 7

Claiming he has the “greatest job in the world,” Keith Johnson, buyer-at-large for the upscale retailer Anthropologie, invites viewers along on an international treasure hunt on the Sundance Channel original series, MAN SHOPS GLOBE. In out-of-the-way antique shops, private dealerships and craft stalls, Johnson looks for one-of-a-kind home furnishings and accessories that will reach consumers in Anthropologie outlets, or inspire the company’s design and manufacturing team.

In each half-hour program, Keith travels to a new country in search of fantastic and unusual decorative objects, furniture, and textiles. He also seeks out the world’s best artists and crafts people. MAN SHOPS GLOBE follows Johnson, who travels six months of the year, to ends-of-the-earth excursions, from flea markets in Paris to remote villages in India and obscure art studios in Turkey.

Anyone who knows me knows I could never even come close. But I am fascinated by this “100 Things” movement. People who are embracing a ‘decluttered life’ and choosing to live with only 100 things. There was a TIME article on their efforts: here.

One of the books recommended in that article is this:

When Organizing is Not Enough: SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Julie Morgenstern.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox

on Apple

This doesnt come out until Nov. 13, but I love children’s book author Roald Dahl and saw a preview for this one this weekend.

By Wes Anderson…. The classic stop-motion animation is quirky and charming and the characters seem great: high-profile voices like George Clooney, Meryl Streep & Bill Murray.

Mrs. Fox:

“We’re different. We all are. Him especially — but there’s something kind of fantastic about that. Isn’t there?”

Fascinating info graphic by the NY Times here.

The American Time Use Survey asks thousands of American residents to recall every minute of a day. Here is how people over age 15 spent their time in 2008.

I Was Told There’d Be Cake by Sloan Crosley

From accidentally despoiling an exhibit at the Museum of Natural History to siccing the cops on the wrong neighbor, Sloane Crosley can do no right, despite the best of intentions—or perhaps because of them. In a sharp, original storytelling style that confounds expectations at every turn, Crosley recounts her victories and catastrophes in an irresistible voice that is all her own, finding genuine insights in the most unpredictable places.
